A pushchair that is all-terrain and offers great maneuverability will be perfect whether you are searching for a buggy for nature walks or taking a stroll along the main street. These models usually have large wheels and have a powerful suspension to ensure smooth rides over bumps and rough ground.
The majority are suitable for babies and come with a lie-flat baby seat or newborn carrycot. These vehicles also have tyres that do not flatten, which are typically comprised of foam.
Suspension
A genuine all-terrain pushchair should have a good suspension that is designed to be smooth and comfortable on rough terrain. This will make your child to feel comfortable and comfortable. The wheels should also be large and usually have a puncture-proof design to protect against damage caused by sharp rocks or sticks.
Some all-terrain strollers also provide the option of switching between tyres with different conditions. Based on the type of terrain you want to explore Some all-terrain pushchairs come with a swivel front wheel which can be locked to ensure stability or left unlocked for greater maneuverability when needed.
A few all-terrain strollers include a brake handbrake lockable that is more accessible by hand. This is superior to the traditional pedal that is located on the handlebars. This is a great feature to have if you like to tackle the steep slopes, especially with a child in the seat and a lot of shopping bags hidden beneath!
If you don’t want go as far as an all-terrain pushchair, there are many strollers that offer excellent – but not perfect – off-road capability, with excellent suspension and big wheels. These are typically more affordable than the more expensive all-terrain pushchairs but are ideal for excursions to the dog park or short country walks.
Many of these strollers are suitable for newborns with either a carrycot or a car seat that is designed for infants. Be aware that the seats do not lay flat when pushing over bumps or dips. As per EU regulations, they only have to meet minimum requirements of an incline of about 150 degrees. Graco has gotten around this issue with its new ‘comfitech seat suspension’ which allows the seat to recline at a flatter angle for a bit more comfort. This feature is available on the Lila XP All-Terrain Pushchair, which can be combined with the Graco Infant Car Seat to create a three-in-one travel system.

The seat of an all-terrain buggy could be facing the world or towards the parent and expands with your child, from newborn to toddler (it’s suitable for children as young as 6 months). It’s fitted with foam-filled ‘never flat’ tyres to ensure a smooth ride with dual frame suspension, as well as luxurious padding in the seat unit that offers superb postural support and comfort. A lot of all-terrain pushchairs do not have a reversible seat, but the models like the Oyster 3, Venicci Tinum and egg 2 do have this option and both offer an excellent level of off-road performance, and also have an adequate weight limit for a 2-year old. Many pushchairs are categorized as all-rounders. These include the iCandy Pear, Bugaboo Cameleon and a few others. They are able to navigate rough terrain in parks or National Trust locations, but lack the off-road capabilities of true all-terrain strollers.
There are also crossover models that are a great alternative to extreme off-road and high-street and have great all-terrain capability with large wheels and a great suspension, but they’re built more like a standard pushchair with reversible seats as well as fully-equipped carrycots and can be used on a daily basis. Some of the top models are manufactured by companies like iCandy Easywalker and Bugaboo.
Wheels
If you live in a rural area or regularly take your baby on walks over rough ground an all-terrain pushchair is vital. These models typically come with larger back wheels than regular pushchairs, making them better in handling rough off-road terrain, and ensuring the most comfortable ride for your child. Many also come with a robust suspension and puncture-proof models which make them suitable for use on woodland, grass or forest paths, gravel tracks and market town cobbles.
Certain all-terrain strollers also have a lockable wheel on the front that provides stability while walking over rough terrain or over high kerbs. Some models have swivel wheels at the front which allows you to move the buggy more easily when you need to change direction or turn corners.
Most all-terrain pushchairs feature air-filled tyres that provide excellent shock absorption and are perfect for rough terrain however they’re more susceptible to punctures than EVA tyres that are used on lightweight city strollers which is why you should invest in a repair kit, spare inner tube and pump to go with your pushchair. Some all-terrain models have foam tyres which are less susceptible to punctures but aren’t as effective at absorption of shock and can feel harder to push than tyres with air filled.
The brand new Bugaboo Fox 5 pushchair is a great model of a stroller that includes both foam and air filled tyres. It also features an excellent suspension and large rear wheels that are puncture proof and suitable for off-road usage or running (once your child reaches the appropriate age). The model is also suitable from birth and can be used with a carrycot or a lie-flat seat.
The iCandy Peach All-Terrain is another option. It has large tyres, a single steering-wheel in the front and big tyres. It is not as flexible as other all-terrain strollers on this list however it can handle hilly terrain well and features a large one-handed fold that’s great for long walks in the countryside, or long trips. It’s also suitable for infants and features a large canopy that extends and a movable handlebar and a generously sized basket.
Storage
For parents that would like to take their children off-road, but don’t want to commit to taking on Ben Nevis, there are some top all-terrain pushchairs that provide the best of both worlds. Choose a model that has an excellent all-terrain capability, solid suspension and large puncture-proof wheels, but built in a more traditional pushchair design, with reversible seats and all carrycot options.
UPPAbaby’s popular Ridge all terrain pushchair is a great example. 3 wheeler pushchair pushchairsandprams.uk has a great suspension and a single-hand fold and a large basket that can hold up to 10kg. But it also has numerous features that are suitable for parents, such as an adjustable handlebar as well as an operated break that can be operated by hand on the right. A hood that can be removed and cleaned with cool soapy water is another useful feature that can help prevent mildew and mould from forming.
If you’re planning on using your all-terrain pushchair off-road it’s best to opt for air-filled tyres instead of those with rubber grips. They’ll provide an easier ride on rough terrain, and make it easier to navigate in tight spaces. If you are planning to use your all terrain pushchair for occasional jogging ensure that the front wheel is swivelable or has a quick release feature to lock it in place for more stability.
It’s important to check the fabric of your pushchair to ensure it can be machine washed to maintain them in perfect condition. If not, a spot wash with warm soapy water and warm water should suffice. The fabric can be dried completely outside to avoid mildew or mould.
The majority of our 3 wheeled all terrain pushchairs are able to be used from the time of birth. Look for models with an all-flat seat that is fully lie-flat and a reversible rearrest that will allow you to use it from birth until your child is three years old. If you want to travel as a family of three, there are plenty of models that are compatible with car seats thanks to built-in adaptors. You can leave your car at home and instead use all-terrain strollers with a fixed wheel for jogging, light or casual strolling. One example is the Delta Special Needs All-Terrain Jogger from Delichon, which comes in various frame and canvas sizes that are suitable for children as well as adults.
