microplus in China.Specimens of Dolichoperoides macalpini (Nicoll, 1914) (Digenea Dolichoperoididae) were collected from Australian venomous snakes (Elapidae) Notechis scutatus Peters, 1861 and Austrelaps superbus (Günther, 1858) from Tasmania and surrounding islands and N. s. occidentalis Glauert, 1948 from wetlands near Perth, Western Australia. Despite variation in morphological measurements, genetic analysis showed that the one species of digeneans infected the snakes from all locations. This study presents the first DNA sequences for D. macalpini (internal transcribed spacer, 18S, 28S), confirming its placement in a family separate from the Reniferidae and Telorchiidae. Analysis of the infection dynamics of infection in Western Australian snakes showed significant differences in levels of infection between wetland locations, season and year of collection. Infection of D. macalpini was reported in the gastrointestinal tract, including the mouth, in freshly euthanised snakes in Western Australia, and in the lung in Tasmanian snakes, consistent with earlier reports. Differences in morphology and site of infection are suggested to be due to a combination of season and maturity of the digenean, with infection potentially occurring early in the season, as the snakes emerge from torpor. The need for research on the seasonal dynamics of infection with this parasite is discussed.Neospora caninum, an apicomplexan parasite, is the etiological agent of neosporosis, a disease that leads to neurological symptoms in dogs and abortion in cattle. Vaccine or drug treatments for neosporosis remain to be determined. Therefore, it is of undeniable relevance to investigate new molecules involved in the parasite’s successful survival within the host cell. The aim of this study was to characterize the N. caninum peroxiredoxin (NcPrx), an enzyme involved in the redox system of the parasite. The NcPrx amino acid sequence showed high identity and similarity compared to homologues representatives of Apicomplexa phylum. We implemented molecular and phylogenetic analyses of partial mitochondrial DNA sequences to assess the host distribution of 3 genera of vector-transmitted avian blood parasites (Plasmodium, Leucocytozoon and Haemoproteus) across a range of islands off the southeastern tip of PNG. We identified 40 new lineages of haemosporidians, including five lineages belonging to Leucocytozoon, a genus not previously described in this region. Leucocytozoon infections were only observed on the larger, human-inhabited islands. Lineages belonging to Haemoproteus were diverse and had broad geographic distribution. Compared to the mainland, Haemoproteus parasites on the smaller, more distant islands had greater host specificity and lower infection prevalence. The black sunbird (Leptocoma aspasia), a commonly caught species, was shown to be a rare host for Haemoproteus spp. infections. Moreover, although birds of the genus Pitohui harbor a neurotoxin (homobatrachotoxin), they demonstrated an infection prevalence comparable to other bird species. The islands of PNG display heterogeneous patterns of haemosporidian diversity, distribution and host-specificity and serve as a valuable model system for studying host-parasite-vector interactions.
In modern medical education, traditional face-to-face teaching is increasingly being supplemented by innovative teaching methods, such as case-based learning or e‑learning.
Design and evaluation of a new course concept in thoracic surgery to motivate students and at the same time find ways to relieve the medical staff in their teaching activities.
All students of thethird clinical semester at the University of Regensburg completed acase-based course on the topic of pulmonary nodules in the summer semester 2016 and winter semester 2016/2017 as part of the practical course in thoracic surgery. This involved amoderated face-to-face seminar for one group of students and apurely online event for the other group. The knowledge gain and the subjective learning experience of the students were evaluated via questionnaires.
Atotal of 190students took part in the courses, 88in the face-to-face course and 102 in the online course. Although both groups recorded asignificant increase in knowledge as aresult of the course intervention, the students in the face-to-face course showed significantly higher subjective satisfaction compared to their peers in the online course.

Based on the results of several recent randomized trials, European and American guidelines on valvular heart disease management have substantially expanded the indications for transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). We present an all-comer data on peri-operative risk profile and in-hospital outcomes from Germany for patients treated by TAVI or isolated surgical aortic valve replacement (iSAVR) in 2020, providing an opportunity to compare study data with data from daily clinical practice.
Data concerning all isolated aortic valve procedures performed in Germany in 2020 were retrieved from the mandatory nationwide quality control program. Expected mortality was calculated with the annually revised German Aortic valve score (AKL-score) based on the data of either catheter-based (AKL-CATH) or isolated surgical (AKL-CHIR) aortic valve replacement in Germany from the previous year (2019).

Total numbers of both iSAVR and TAVI in Germany were lower in 2020 than in 2019, most likely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the relative number of patients treated by TAVI as compared to iSAVR continues to increase. Despite older age and more severe comorbidities compared to patients undergoing iSAVR the in-hospital mortality after TAVI continued to decrease in 2020 and remains significantly lower than after iSAVR.
EgMYB108 regulates VLCFA anabolism in oil palm. Very long-chain fatty acids (VLCFAs), which are fatty acids with more than 18 C, can not only be used as a form of triglyceride (TAG) but also provide precursors for the biosynthesis of cuticle wax, and they exist in plant epidermal cells in the form of wax in higher plants. However, which and how transcriptional factors (TFs) regulate this process is largely unknown in oil palm. In this study, a MYB transcription factor (EgMYB108) with high expression in the mesocarp of oil palm fruit was characterized. Overexpression of EgMYB108 promoted not only total lipid content but also VLCFA accumulation in oil palm embryoids. Subsequently, transient transformation in protoplasts and qRT-PCR analysis indicated that the EgKCS5 and EgLACS4 genes were significantly increased with the overexpression of EgMYB108. Furthermore, yeast one‑hybrid assays, dual-luciferase assays and EMSAs demonstrated that EgMYB108 binds to the promoters of EgKCS5 and EgLACS4 and regulates their nt transformation in protoplasts and qRT-PCR analysis indicated that the EgKCS5 and EgLACS4 genes were significantly increased with the overexpression of EgMYB108. Furthermore, yeast one‑hybrid assays, dual-luciferase assays and EMSAs demonstrated that EgMYB108 binds to the promoters of EgKCS5 and EgLACS4 and regulates their transcription. Finally, EgMYB108 interacts with the promoters of EgLACS and EgKCS simultaneously and finally improves the VLCFA and total lipid contents; a pathway summarizing this interaction was depicted.. The results provide new insight into the mechanism by which EgMYB108 regulates lipid and VLCFA accumulation in oil palm.
To report on the phenomenon of body drift in neurofibromatosis scoliosis and discuss its implication on surgical safety.
Ten dystrophic neurofibromatosis scoliosis (NF) and ten adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) were studied by radiographs, CT, and MRI. The curve characteristics and a detailed analysis of the morphology of the apical and three adjacent vertebral segments above and below were done. The coronal alignment and the presence of a drift of the vertebral body in relationship to the lamina were carefully studied in both groups and compared.
The mean cobb angle in the NF group was 77.6°, and 63.7° in the AIS group. All the studied vertebra in the NF group had extensive pedicle changes, which were more severe at the apical and periapical regions. Body drift was noted in 29 vertebral segments, with 9/10 of apical segments showing a significant drift. The body drift was associated with significant pedicle dystrophic changes and was independent of the curve magnitude. In comparison, in AIS, no body drift was noted despite a larger deformity and more severe vertebral rotation.

This was present even in curves less than 60° and could result in cord injury while instrumenting the concave pedicle. MRI is invaluable for the pre-mortem diagnosis of sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (sCJD), demonstrating characteristic diffusion abnormalities. Previous work showed these changes were often not reported (low sensitivity), leading to eventual diagnosis at a more advanced state. Here, we reviewed the situation a decade later, on the presumption of improved access and awareness over time.
We reviewed initial MRI scans of 102 consecutive suspected sCJD patients recruited to the National Prion Monitoring Cohort study between 2015 and 2019, assessing for characteristic signal changes in the striatum, thalamus and cortical ribbon. We compared our findings toformal reports from referring centres. Requesting indications werestudied to assess if they were suggestive of CJD. Patients were examined and their MRC Prion Disease Rating Scale scores recorded.
We identified characteristic MRI abnormalities in 101 cases (99% sensitivity), whilst referring centres reported changes in 70 cases (69% sensitivity), which was a significant improvement in reporting sensitivity from 2012.
