An imbalance of cellular oxidants and reductants causes redox stress, which must be rapidly detected to restore homeostasis. In bacteria, the Firmicutes encode conserved Spx-family transcriptional regulators that modulate transcription in response to redox stress. SpxA1 is an Spx-family orthologue in the intracellular pathogen Listeria monocytogenes that is essential for aerobic growth and pathogenesis. Here, we investigated the role of SpxA1 in growth and virulence by identifying genes regulated by SpxA1 in broth and during macrophage infection. We found SpxA1-activated genes encoding heme biosynthesis enzymes and catalase (kat) were required for L. monocytogenes aerobic growth in rich medium. An Spx-recognition motif previously defined in Bacillus subtilis was identified in the promoters of SpxA1-activated genes and proved necessary for the proper activation of two genes, indicating this regulation by SpxA1 is likely direct. Together, these findings elucidated the mechanism of spxA1 essentiality in vitro and demonstrated that SpxA1 is required for basal expression of scavenging enzymes to combat redox stress generated in the presence of oxygen. © 2020 The Authors. BACKGROUND Physician-nurse communication has always been an important agenda for health care work and an important concept in nursing theory. During night shifts, effective doctor and nurse communication can enhance mutual trust, provide timely and appropriate medical services to patients, reduce adverse events, and enhance patient safety. DESIGN A qualitative study was conducted. METHODS Husserl’s descriptive phenomenology method and semi-structured in-depth interviews were used to collect data from 8 nurses and 5 doctors. Colaizzi’s method was used to analyze data using MAXQDA12. The Standards for Reporting Qualitative Research (COREQ) checklist was followed (See Supplementary File 1). This collection comprises a total of 18 mallei, 28 incudes and three stapedes. It allows the documentation of both intra- and interspecific variability of ossicular morphology within Cainotheriidae. We show that despite considerable intraspecific variability, the malleus, the incus and the stapes appear to be taxonomically informative at the Cainotheriidae scale. This work further provides the first description of a reconstructed ossicular chain of a terrestrial Paleogene artiodactyl species, found in a basicranium of the late Oligocene cainotheriine Caenomeryx filholi (Pech Desse locality). © 2020 Anatomical Society.OBJECTIVE To compare the accuracy of pedicle screw insertion (PSI) into canine lumbosacral vertebrae with custom-made three-dimensionally (3D)-printed drill guides or freehand insertion. STUDY DESIGN Ex vivo study. SAMPLE POPULATION Nineteen canine lumbosacral specimens. METHODS Drill guides for PSI were designed on the basis of safe screw insertion trajectories by using preoperative computed tomography (CT) and produced by 3D printing of templates. Right and left sides of the specimens were randomly allocated to two groups; 4-mm pedicle screws were inserted in L5-L6 and L7-S1 spinal segments either freehand (control group) or with custom-made drill guides (guide group). Sixty-six screws were inserted with each method. Insertion angles (α, β), bone stock, and vertebral canal breach were assessed according to postoperative CT. χ2 Tests were used to compare vertebral canal breach between groups and vertebrae. AdipoRon agonist RESULTS Breaches in the vertebral canal were less common (P less then .001) when screws were placed with a guide in the guide group (9/66, 14%) than without a guide (30/66, 45%). The rate of vertebral canal breach differed at L5 (P = .021) but not at L6 (P = .05), L7 (P = .075) or S1 (P = .658). The angle of insertion (α) did not differ between specimens with and without breaches (guide, P = .068; control, P = .394). CONCLUSION The use of a customized 3D-printed guide generally improved the accuracy of PSI in canine lumbosacral vertebrae, although statistical significance was reached only at L5. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The use of customized drill guides may be considered as an alternative to freehand PSI in the lumbosacral area, especially for L5-L6 vertebrae. © 2020 The American College of Veterinary Surgeons.BACKGROUND Premature infants are at risk for adverse metabolic and neurodevelopmental outcomes due to growth alterations in early infancy. Monitoring body composition by tracking gains in fat mass (FM) and fat-free mass (FFM) may assist clinicians in preventing obesity and metabolic disease while promoting optimal growth and development. A prospective, observational study was conducted to determine the ability of ultrasound (US) measurements of muscle and adipose tissue thickness to predict whole-body composition (FFM, FM, percent body fat [%BF]). METHODS Sixty-three healthy premature infants were recruited from the University of Minnesota’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Anthropometric measurements, air displacement plethysmography, and US measurements of abdomen, biceps, and quadriceps muscle and of adipose tissue thickness were conducted when infants were medically stable. The relationship between US measurements and body composition was assessed using stepwise linear regression analysis. RESULTS In linear regression analyses, biceps adipose and the sum of adipose thickness measurements were significant predictors of %BF, but prediction models had low R2 (0.
