Fluoxetine, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, has been reported to have neuroprotective effects and be effective in treating neurodegenerative disorders including schizophrenia. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect and underlying neuroprotective mechanism of fluoxetine on the sensorimotor gating deficit, a schizophrenia-like behavior in a neurodevelopmental schizophrenic mouse model induced by MK-801, an N-methyl-D-aspartate glutamate receptor antagonist. On postnatal day 7, mouse pups were treated with a total seven subcutaneous daily injections of MK-801 (1 mg/kg/day), followed by intraperitoneal injection of fluoxetine (5 or 10 mg/kg/day) starting on postnatal day 14 in the MK-801-injected mice for 4 weeks. The sensorimotor gating deficit in mice was measured by prepulse inhibition (PPI) behavioral test on postnatal day 43. After the behavioral test, the protein expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) was measured by western blot or ELISA in the frontal cortex of mice. Our results showed fluoxetine attenuated PPI deficit and the decrease of cerebral BDNF expression in the MK-801-injected mice. These results suggest that fluoxetine can be used to treat sensorimotor gating deficit in a neurodevelopmental mouse model of schizophrenia, and the attenuating effect of fluoxetine on sensorimotor gating deficit may be related to fluoxetine’s neuroprotective effect targeting on the modulation of cerebral BDNF.
To determine if vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) changes with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in treatment-resistant major depressive disorder (MDD).
Serum from a naturalistic population of 15 patients with MDD was collected at baseline and after standard TMS treatment. this website VEGF concentration was determined via ELISA. Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology Self Report and Patient Health Questionnaire were used as a measure of depression symptom severity, clinical response and remission. Mann-Whitney U and Kendall’s Tau Correlation were used for continuous variables.
VEGF increased from pre- to post-TMS (+30.3%) in remitters whereas VEGF decreased in non-remitters (-9.87%) (P < 0.05). This same pattern was observed when comparing mean %change in VEGF between responders (+14.7%) and non-responders (-14.9%) (P = 0.054). Correlation was present between change in VEGF concentration (baseline to post) and change in Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology-Self Report at Tx30 (r = -0.371, P < levels in depressed patients receiving TMS. This study provides correlative data supporting further investigation into VEGF’s role as an important mediator in the processes underpinning TMS’ antidepressant effects and as a potential biomarker of clinical outcomes.
Shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) for frontline healthcare workers managing the current severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic is a major, global challenge. In this pilot study, we describe a simulation-based method for evaluating the suitability and acceptability of an alternative biological isolation garment (BIG, a gown or a suit) for clinical use by emergency department (ED) personnel. Using a high-fidelity simulator, participants provided airway management according to the SARS-CoV-2 protocol. A nonvisible fluorescent marker was used as a surrogate marker of contamination. We assessed ultraviolet light visualization of the fluorescent marker after doffing and satisfaction with donning, use during simulation, and doffing. We found that after doffing, markers were not visualized on any of the participants and that the median satisfaction scores of the alternative and standard BIG (sBIG) were 4 [interquartile range (IQR) = 1-5] and 4 (IQR = 2-4), respectively. ernative and standard BIG (sBIG) were 4 [interquartile range (IQR) = 1-5] and 4 (IQR = 2-4), respectively. This study evaluated a multimodal, simulation-based course in veterinary anesthesia integrated into an existing veterinary curriculum.
A simulation-based, multimodal training course in clinical anesthesia was evaluated using outcomes from multiple levels of the Kirkpatrick Model of Training Evaluation. Cognitive and affective outcomes were evaluated before and after instruction. Head-mounted cameras were used to record clinical performance during students’ first live patient anesthesia experience in the curriculum.
Pretest-posttest analysis of cognitive and affective outcomes for course participants revealed significant increases in knowledge and self-efficacy. Course participants received higher ratings on clinical task performance and professional skills (ie, communication and collaboration) compared with a matched control group when evaluated by blinded, external raters using a standardized rubric.
These findings indicate that implementing a multimodal anesthesia simulation-based course directly into the curriculum can enhance cognitive and affective outcomes and prepare students for subsequent anesthesia-related patient care experiences.

Syringes containing anti-VEGF drugs to treat retinal diseases are prepared in different ways by various parties with syringe selection, preparation, and storage conditions impacting the risk of injecting particles into the vitreous. This study examines particle loads from various syringes over time.
Four syringes were studied two plastic transfer syringes lubricated with silicone oil or oleamide, a glass syringe with baked-on silicone, and a lubricant-free polymer syringe. Syringes were rinsed with water or filled with buffer and analyzed over time; particles were quantified by flow imaging. Particle formation in a bevacizumab formulation was also characterized.
Insulin syringes consistently showed very high particle counts. Oleamide-lubricated syringes had substantially fewer particles but showed appreciable increases over time (leading to visible particles). Baked-on silicone glass syringes and lubricant-free polymer syringes both showed low particle levels ≥ 10 microns. Lubricant-free syringes showed the lowest particle levels ≥ 1 micron and the lowest particle levels with bevacizumab agitation.
