A food waste treating system was proposed in this study by combining biochar-assisted high-solid anaerobic digestion and subsequent steam gasification of the digestate. The effect of solid level, biochar dosage in anaerobic digestion on the properties of biogas, syngas, and final biochar products were investigated. Results showed that at a high total solid level and biochar dosage of 25 g/L and 50 g/L, the accumulative methane yield reached 110.3 mL CH4/g VS and 126.7 mL CH4/g VS, respectively. From steam gasification of different digestates under 850 °C for 15 min, a maximum of 34.92 mmol/g for the hydrogen yield and 11.44 MJ/m3 for the higher heating value could be obtained for the syngas. In this work, satisfactory nitrogen removal were achieved in a deammonification granular sludge reactor (R1, 0.42 ± 0.03 kg N / (m3·d)) and a mixed flocculent with granular sludge reactor (R2, 0.39 ± 0.04 kg N / (m3·d)) at ambient temperature (21-28 ℃) . The good adaptability of anammox bacteria (Candidatus Jettenia) to ambient temperature ensured its efficient activity (0.84-1.54 mg N/(g VSS·h)). The overexpression ammonia monooxygenase gene abundances in ammonia oxidizing bacteria (Nitrosomonas) was also predicted. The inhibition of hydrazine and the competition of denitrifying bacteria (Denitratisoma) to nitrite nitrogen, leading to a low Nitrospira relative abundances (0.2%-2.1%) . It was also found that R1 was more resistant to the unfavorable condition. For R2, higher Denitratisoma abundances (9.2%-18.5%) and predicted metabolic pathway abundances related to carbon metabolism were observed.Traditional methods of enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose to cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are limited due to the low enzymatic efficiency and large amount of waste liquid. The purpose of this study is to improve the yield and production efficiency of CNCs by enzymatic hydrolysis. A one-step mechano-enzymatic hydrolysis method was developed by utilizing the synergy of wet grinding and enzymatic hydrolysis reaction to efficiently prepare CNCs. Under the optimal reaction conditions, the maximum CNCs yield of 49.3% was achieved with higher thermal stability and crystallinity index of 76.7%. Mechano-enzymatic hydrolysis followed the first order pseudo-kinetics, and fractal kinetics demonstrated that mechanical force of rotation speed affected the fractal dimensions and binding ability between substrate and enzyme. This study provides an alternative method to prepare CNCs, which can significantly avoid the use of bulk water, improve the production efficiency of CNCs and thus lower the production cost.Septic tanks have been widely used for blackwater treatment in developing countries, while high-rate septic tanks with improved methane recovery are yet to be achieved. This study investigated biosolids-derived biochar (synthesized at 300℃, 425℃, and 550℃) as an additive for developing high-rate septic tanks. The experiments were conducted with anaerobic bioreactors operated with synthetic blackwater under septic tank conditions. All biochar amended reactors demonstrated a steady increase in daily methane production for increasing OLR from 0.08 to 3 g COD/L/d. The control reactor showed significant process disturbances at OLRs ≥ 2 g COD/L/d with an accumulation of volatile fatty acids followed by pH drop. At OLR of 3 g COD/L/d, the daily methane production from biochar amended reactors was ~ 4.3 times higher than the control (300 vs. 70 mL per day). Biochar addition established a robust microbiome consisted of a higher abundance of hydrogenotrophic and acetoclastic methanogens and hydrogen-producing fermentative bacteria.
People who inject drugs (PWID) lag behind other key populations in HIV care continuum outcomes. The impacts of criminal justice reform and increasing drug treatment access on HIV have been underexplored.
We developed agent-based models (ABM) of sexual partnerships among PWID and non-PWID, and injection equipment-sharing partnerships among PWID in five US cities (Baltimore, Boston, Miami, New York City, San Francisco) over 3 years. The first set of ABM projected changes in partnership discordance among PWID as a function of decreasing ZIP code-level incarceration rates. The second set projected discordance as a function of increasing ZIP code-level drug treatment access. ABM were parameterized and validated overall, and by city and PWID race/ethnicity (Black, Latino, White) using National HIV Behavioral Surveillance data, administrative ZIP code-level data, surveillance reports and prior literature. Informed by research on prisoner release and community-level HIV prevalence, reductions in incarceration ratimpacts of drug treatment in this study.
Reductions in incarceration rates may lead to short-term increases in sero-discordant partnerships among some PWID by increasing community-level HIV prevalence. Efforts to increase HIV testing, engagement in care and community reintegration post release, should be strengthened in the wake of incarceration reform. Additional research should confirm these findings and explore the lack of widespread impacts of drug treatment in this study.A 10-year-old male American Shorthair cat was presented after a witnessed syncopal event. A Holter monitor demonstrated a long QT interval and revealed a rhythm characteristic of torsades de pointes (TdP) coincident with a bout of syncope. On subsequent Holter monitor recordings, sotalol did not prolong the QT interval further and did not reduce the severity of the underlying ventricular tachyarrhythmias, but no TdP was identified. When another syncopal event occurred, sotalol was discontinued, and oral amiodarone and magnesium were started. This resulted in improvement in the ventricular tachyarrhythmia. No syncopal events occurred in the ensuing 3 months, but the cat died of an unrelated disease shortly after. This is the first report of naturally occurring torsades de pointes in a domestic cat.
