    The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical implication of tumour spread through air spaces (STAS) as a prognostic factor in pathological stage I lung adenocarcinoma treated with lobectomy and to identify related parameters.

    Medical records of patients who underwent pulmonary lobectomy for stage I (American Joint Committee on Cancers eighth edition) lung adenocarcinomas between 2012 and February 2018 at our institutions were reviewed retrospectively. Patients with minimally invasive adenocarcinomas and tumours ≥3 cm in size were excluded. Included patients were classified into STAS (+) and STAS (-) groups. Clinical implications of STAS and recurrence in patients were investigated.

    A total of 109 patients was analysed 41 (37.6%) in the STAS (+) and 68 (62.4%) in the STAS (-) group. STAS was associated with larger consolidation diameter on chest tomography (≥1.5 cm; P = 0.006) or a higher invasive ratio (≥85%; P = 0.012) and presence of a micropapillary pattern in multivariable analysis (P = 0.003) The recurrence-free survival curve showed statistical difference (P = 0.008) with 3-year survival rates of 73.0% (9 patients) and 96.8% (2 patients) in the STAS (+) and STAS (-) group, respectively. However, no statistical significance was observed in the lung cancer-related survival curve (P = 0.648). The presence of STAS was an independent risk factor for recurrence in multivariable analysis (hazard ratio = 5.9, P = 0.031).

    Listeria monocytogenes was associated with more than 60 produce recalls, including tomato, cherry, broccoli, lemon, and lime, between 2017 and 2020. This study describes the effects of temperature, time, and food substrate as factors influencing L. monocytogenes behavior on whole intact raw fruits and vegetables. Ten intact whole fruit and vegetable commodities were chosen based on data gaps identified in a systematic literature review. A cocktail of five L. monocytogenes strains that included clinical, food, or environmental isolates linked to foodborne outbreaks was used to inoculate intact whole fruits and vegetables. Samples were incubated at 2, 12, 22, 30, and 35°C with relative humidities matched to typical real-world conditions. Foods were sampled (n = 6) for up to 28 days, depending on temperature. Growth and decline rates were estimated using DMFit, an Excel add-in. Growth rates were compared with ComBase modeling predictions for L. monocytogenes. The 10 produce commodities supported growth of L. monocytogenes at 22 and 35°C. Growth and survival at 2 and 12°C varied by produce commodity. Naganishia vishniacii, a yeast species hitherto only isolated from McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica, is an example of a polyextremophile. Here we present the first draft genomic sequence of N. vishniacii. Using comparative genomics, we unraveled unique characteristics of cold associated adaptations. 336 putative genes (total 6183) encoding solute transfers and chaperones, among others, were absent in sister species. Among genes shared by N. vishniacii and its closest related species we found orthologs encompassing possible evidence of positive selection (dN/dS > 1). Genes associated with photoprotection were found in agreement with high solar irradiation exposure. Also genes coding for desaturases and genomic features associated with cold tolerance (i.e. trehalose synthesis and lipid metabolism) were explored. Finally, biases in amino acid usage (namely an enrichment of glutamine and a trend in proline reduction) were observed, possibly conferring increased protein flexibility. To the best of our knowledge, such a combination of mechanisms for cold tolerance has not been previously reported in fungi, making N. vishniacii a unique model for the study of the genetic basis and evolution of cold adaptation strategies.

    This study enrolled 64 adult patients who underwent heart transplant at our institution. The degree of right ventricular distensibility was quantified by calculating the difference between right atrial pressures (RAPs) of X descent and Y descent (X-Y) from the RAP waveform in right heart catheterization. Histologically, the ratio of the interstitial tissue in myocardial biopsy samples was calculated.

    Of the 64 patients, 35 (55%) had a reduced right ventricular distensibility at 1 week after heart transplant (X-Y > 1 mmHg, RD group), and 29 (45%) had a normal right ventricular distensibility (X-Y ≤ 1 mmHg, ND group). The mean RAP and mean pulmonary capillary wedge pressure 1 week after heart transplant in the RD group were significantly higher than that in the ND group.
