Chemical compounds studied in this article. It is well-known that exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) may cause adverse health impacts. However, there are few investigations assessing the association between PAH exposure and the nutritional status of the general population. Thus, the purpose of this investigation was to assess the correlation between PAH metabolites and nutritional biomarkers in the U.S. general population. From the 2003-2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 4,545 eligible participants were included in this cross-sectional study. To assess PAH exposure, ten urinary PAH metabolites were measured. Ruxotemitide Eleven serum nutritional biomarkers including carotenoids and vitamins were measured. The association between PAH metabolites and serum nutritional biomarkers was investigated using multivariate linear regression models. Increased 2-hydroxyfluorene was inversely correlated with elven serum nutritional biomarkers α-carotene (β = -0.529, p less then 0.001), β-cryptoxanthin (β = -0.968, p less then 0.001), cis-β -2.483, p less then 0.001). Increased 1-hydroxypyrene was inversely correlated with eight serum nutritional biomarkers α-carotene (β = -0.601, p = 0.001), β-cryptoxanthin (β = -1.071, p = 0.001), cis-β carotene (β = -0.170, p = 0.001), lutein and zeaxanthin (β = -1.074, p less then 0.001), retinyl palmitate (β = -0.214, p = 0.005), retinyl stearate (β = -0.041, p = 0.043), total lycopene (β = -1.664, p = 0.011) and retinol (β = -1.381, p = 0.011). These results demonstrate that PAH exposure is significantly correlated with decreased levels of serum nutritional biomarkers.Phenolic compounds from plant sources have significant health-promoting properties and are known to be an integral part of folk and herbal medicines. Consumption of phenolics is known to alleviate the risk of various lifestyle diseases including cancer, cardiovascular, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s. In this context, numerous plant crops have been explored and characterized based on phenolic compounds for their use as supplements, nutraceutical, and pharmaceuticals. The present review highlights some important source of bioactive phenolic compounds and novel technologies for their efficient extraction. These techniques include the use of microwave, ultrasound, and supercritical methods. Besides, the review will also highlight the use of response surface methodology (RSM) as a statistical tool for optimizing the recoveries of the phenolic bioactives from plant-based matrices.Methotrexate is used as first-line treatment of moderate to severe psoriasis. Despite the marked variability in treatment outcomes, no pharmacogenetic markers are currently used for personalised management of therapy. In this retrospective study, we investigated the effects of genetic predisposition on efficacy and toxicity of low-dose methotrexate in a cohort of 137 patients with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis. We genotyped 16 polymorphisms in genes for enzymes involved in the folate-methionine pathway and in methotrexate transport, and analysed their association with treatment efficacy and toxicity using classification and regression tree analysis and logistic regression. The most pronounced effect observed in this study was for GNMT rs10948059, which was identified as a risk factor for inadequate efficacy leading to treatment discontinuation. Patients carrying at least one variant allele had ~7-fold increased risk of treatment failure compared to patients with the wild-type genotype, as shown by the cted previously. These data suggest that polymorphisms in genes for enzymes of the methionine cycle (which affect cell methylation potential) might have significant roles in treatment responses to methotrexate of patients with psoriasis. Further studies are warranted to validate the potential of the pharmacogenetic markers identified.Traditional Chinese Medicine formulas, which are usually considered exerting their holistic clinical benefits via multi-component, multi-target manner, are unique resources for the discovery of multi-component drug combinations. In order to screen and optimize the functional compound combination (FCC) from TCM, we established a novel four-step ‘GCIC’ strategy, including ‘Global profiling’, ‘Chemical structural classification’, ‘Intra-group screening’ and ‘Component-knockout optimization’. Following this strategy, an FCC consisted of four components from Danhong Injection (DHI) was identified, containing ferulic acid, cryptotanshinone, quercetin and anhydrosafflor yellow B. The holistic neuroprotective effects of the FCC were further investigated, indicating that the combination can both activate the antioxidative and anti-inflammatory responses in PC12 cells to protect them from oxidative stress. Major signaling pathways as Nrf2/ARE and Nrf2/AMPK/GSK3β were involved in the protective process of FCC. The ‘GCIC’ strategy established in this study might provide an alternation to traditional strategies in discovering the bioactive components from herbal medicines, especially compounded TCM formulas.Marine biota, especially commercially important species, serves as a basis for human nutrition. However, millions of tons of plastic litter are produced and enter the marine environment every year, with potential adverse impacts on marine organisms. In the present study, we investigated the occurrence and characteristics of microplastic (MP) pollution in the digestive tracts of 13 species of wild nektons from 20 stations sampled in the South China Sea (SCS) and the Indian Ocean (IO), and assessed the human health risks of MPs. The detection rate of MPs ranged from 0.00% to 50.00% from the SCS, which was dramatically lower than that from the IO (10.00-80.00%). The average abundance of MP was 0.18 ± 0.06 items g wet weight-1 (ww-1) in the SCS, which was significantly lower than that in the IO with a concentration of 0.70 ± 0.16 items g ww-1. Most MPs were fibers in type, black in color, and polyester (PES) in polymer composition in both the SCS and IO. Interestingly, distinct profiles of MP pollution were found between the benthic and pelagic nektons 1) The predominant MP composition was PES in the benthic nektons, whereas polyamide (PA) accounted for a larger part of the total MP count in the pelagic nektons within the SCS; 2) The abundance of MP in the benthic nektons (0.
