This review critically discusses recent advances in biosensing derived from molecular beacon and DNA origami structures. Molecular beacons belong to a conventional class of nucleic acid structures used in biosensing, whereas DNA origami nanostructures are fabricated by fully exploiting possibilities offered by nucleic acid nanotechnology. We present nucleic acid scaffolds divided into conventional hairpin molecular beacons and DNA origami, and discuss some relevant examples by focusing on peculiar aspects exploited in biosensing applications. We also critically evaluate analytical uses of the synthetic nucleic acid structures in biosensing to point out similarities and differences between traditional hairpin nucleic acid sequences and DNA origami.A cost-effective, facile, and sensitive fluorescence sensing strategy for Pb2+ ion detection has been developed based on the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and Au nanoparticles (NPs). Glutathione (GSH)-synthesized CQDs acted as both the fluorescence donor and the sorbent to extract Pb2+ ions from the solution via Pb-GSH complexes. Pb2+ ions on CQDs reacted with -SH groups on AuNPs to generate sandwich-type Au-PdS-CQDs, leading to a dramatic decrease in the fluorescence of the CQDs. To expand the potential applications of this strategy, we constructed a sensing strategy using self-organized TiO2 nanotube arrays (TiNTs). The high aspect ratio and transparency for light emitted from the CQDs enabled the TiNTs to serve as a sensitive solid visual platform for the highly selective detection of Pb2+ ions with a detection limit as low as 4.1 × 10-8 mg mL-1. More importantly, the long observation length combined with a small volume enabled a sample acquisition volume of only 2.1 × 10-3 μL, which is smaller than the traditional fluorescence analysis in solution and on commercially available test paper, thus endowing this visual platform with the potential for use in single-cell diagnostics.

    The fully porous long stem could be used for diaphyseal locking and achieve bypass fixation in revision total hip arthroplasty (THA). This study evaluated long-term results for fully porous long stems made of titanium alloy in revision THA.

    Between 2003 and 2010, 45 consecutive femoral revisions were performed using fully porous long stems. Thirty-eight hips had complete clinical and radiographic data for a mean of 13.8 years (range, 10-16.7 years). Femoral bone loss was Paprosky type II in 14 hips, type IIIA in 18 hips, and type IIIB in six hips. Clinical results were analyzed using the Merle d’Aubigné and Postel scoring system. Femoral stress shielding was graded. Radiological loosening of the femoral component was evaluated. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was performed with revision for any reason as the end-point.

    Mean Merle d’Aubigné and Postel score improved significantly from 10.7 before revision to 14.5 at latest follow-up (p < 0.001). Third-degree stress shielding was found in seven hips, and fourth degree in 11 hips. Radiological femoral loosening occurred in one hip, which was revised. Another hip was revised for stem fracture. Kaplan-Meier cumulative survival rate was 94.7% at both ten and 15 years.

    Twenty-four patients (male 18, female 6) with average age 38 years (range 16 to 65 years) were operated for acetabular fracture. With Matta criteria use for assessing the radiological outcomes, the anatomical and good reduction was achieved in 79.1% of the patients. The functional results based on the modified Merle d’Aubigne and Postel criteria were judged excellent in 70.83%. Postoperative complications of acetabular fracture such as heterotopic ossification were found in 16%, post-traumatic arthritis in 20%, and avascular necrosis in 12.5% of patients.

    As there is a strong correlation between anatomic reduction and clinical outcome, the ORIF constitutes an effective method for treatment of displaced acetabular fracture in young aged patients who are considered as the most vulnerable categories in our continent.
