Cellular uptake of carotenes, expression of membrane transporters, reactive oxygen species (ROS), nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), NAD(P)H dehydrogenase quinone1 (NQO1), heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), glutamate-cysteine ligase catalytic subunit (GCLC) were analyzed. Results revealed that phenolic acids increased cellular uptake of carotenes and expression of their membrane transporters. Combination groups contained more phenolic acids showed synergistic effects. For example, β-carotene caffeic acid = 12 significantly suppressed the intracellular ROS (+EZT, 66.34 ± 51.53%) and enhanced the accumulation of nucleus-Nrf2 (+EZT, 30.23 ± 5.30) compared to the groups contained more β-carotene (+EZT, ROS 75.48 ± 2.55%, nucleus-Nrf2 19.48 ± 4.22). This study provided an implication of functional foods formulation and demonstrated that antioxidant synergism may due to the up-regulation of carotenes membrane transporters by phenolic acids.Microwave heating has been considered a promising technology for continuous flow thermal processing of fluid foods due to better retention of quality. Considering the importance of açai-berry pulp and its perishability, the inactivation kinetics of peroxidase (POD) and polyphenol oxidase (PPO) were investigated under conventional and microwave heating. First-order two-component model was well fitted to the data, indicating the presence of at least two fractions with different resistances. POD was more thermally resistant (90% inactivation for 40 s at 89 °C) and could be considered as a processing target. Inactivation curves dependency on heating technology suggests specific effects of microwaves on the protein structure. Additionally, the dielectric properties of açai-berry pulp were evaluated at 915 and 2,450 MHz for temperatures up to 120 °C. This study determined the fate of dark purple eggplant phenolic compounds after baking, boiling, frying, grilling and digestion. Thirty-seven phenolic compounds were identified and quantified in raw eggplant. Frying determined a 74% increase in total hydroxycinnamic acids whereas a decrease was observed after boiling (27%), grilling (51%), and baking (60%). After digestion, 45%, 33% and 22% of total phenolic compounds resulted bioaccessible in baked, grilled and fried dark purple eggplant. Fried eggplant displayed the highest amount of phenolic compounds (751.46 mg/100 g) after digestion. The cooking methods differently affected the release of individual phenolic compounds. Baking and grilling resulted in higher amount of bioaccessible caffeoylquinic acids whereas frying in di-caffeoylquinic acids and hydroxycinnamic acid-amides. A careful design of the cooking method may be pivotal to modulate the release of specific phenolic compounds.Stormflow runoff is the most important agent for phosphorus (P) input to reservoirs, as the particulates contained in runoff carry a substantial amount of P. The settling process of particulates affects the P content of water, and the distribution of particulates determines the P distribution in reservoir sediment. An understanding of flood impacts on the transport, transition, and accumulation of P in a reservoir is critical to reservoir management. In this study, water samples before and after flooding and sediment samples after flooding were collected from Biliuhe Reservoir in Northeast China. P content and load in the water and P-fractions and particle sizes of the sediments were analyzed. Results showed that total particulate P (TPP) increased sharply from 1.56 to 26.72 t after flooding, whereas dissolved organic P (DOP) decreased markedly from 3.24 to 1.17 t, which was largely caused by biological uptake directly or indirectly before flooding. Orthophosphate (PO43-) shared a similar trend with TPP, indicating that PO43- could be adsorbed onto settling particulates, helping to reduce the reactive P introduced by flooding. Reservoir sediment showed a fining trend downstream and the clay fraction exhibited an obvious correlation with P-fractions, demonstrating that the distribution of particulate matter determined P distribution in the sediment. This study also found that particulates from the largest tributary (Biliu River) were only minimally transported from its reservoir entrance to the dam because of a longer travel distance, while contrastingly, particulates from a smaller tributary (Bajia River) were maximally carried to the dam because of a shorter distance. Our fundings suggests that surface water in the reservoir should be released prior to flooding in order to mitigate control of P in the water, moreover, it is necessary to strengthen the effectiveness of pollutant control projects at the reservoir entrance of the Bajia River.Proper management of electronic waste (e-waste) represents significant economic and environmental challenges because of the tremendous quantity of e-waste, the potential of extracting precious metals from recyclable electronics, and the risks of environmental contamination with a variety of toxic compounds. This study focused on the leaching potential of 57 elements from central processing unit mainboards manufactured over time (1980s-2010s) using river water at different pHs as an environmentally-relevant extractant. The exposure time was set to one week. The calculated contamination factors allowed classification of the elements released from mainboards into five groups with increasing leachability and thus environmental concerns. Also, the results demonstrated a changing nature of e-waste related to the technologies employed and the transition of metal contamination signatures from these electronics; newer computer mainboards have a lower risk of Pb and Sn leaching but a greater release of Li, Sb, and a few rare earth elements (Sm, Eu, Dy).
