Treatment with hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) without daily GCs may benefit patients by minimising the cumulative dose of GCs, but clinical experience with HCQ monotherapy is limited. To accumulate evidence for initial HCQ monotherapy in SLE, we retrospectively analysed three new SLE patients who visited Yokohama City University Hospital in 2015. The patients were all Japanese females with a mean age of 26.0 ± 5.3 years, high anti-dsDNA antibody titres, no major organ damage, and a mean pre-treatment Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Index 2000 (SLEDAI-2K) score of 9.3 ± 3.1. During the mean observation period of 3.8 ± 0.8 years, none of them received daily GCs or immunosuppressants, but one of the three patients were treated with short-term oral GCs and NSAIDs for a skin rash or arthralgia flairs. SLEDAI-2K was reduced to 3.3 ± 1.2. No other new SLE symptoms emerged, and the Systemic Lupus International Collaborating Clinics Damage Index (SDI) of them were maintained at 0. None of the patients developed HCQ-related retinal toxicity. Current experience with initial HCQ monotherapy suggests that such a therapeutic strategy may be useful in managing disease activity and preserving cumulative GCs in SLE patients without organ involvements.Objectives. This study aimed to investigate whether Swedish ambulance personnel differ in the extent of suffering from health problems compared to other occupational groups. Methods. Two cohorts of ambulance personnel from 2001 and 2008, with 1778 and 2753 individuals, respectively, were followed regarding assignment of diagnostic coding (International Classification of Diseases codes) until 2016. These two cohorts represent all who were employed as ambulance personnel by public employers during these years. Two comparison groups were added other healthcare workers and other professions. All data were retrieved from national registers. The χ2 test was were used for statistical calculation. Results. Swedish ambulance personnel are at a significantly higher risk of being affected by ‘Paroxysmal tachycardia, atrial fibrillation and flutter, other cardiac arrhythmias’, by ‘Other intervertebral disc disorders’ and by ‘Arthropathies’, when compared to both comparison groups in both cohorts. Almost similar results were seen for ‘Gonarthrosis’ and for ‘Dorsopathies’. Conclusions. Swedish ambulance personnel run the risk of being affected by certain diseases and injuries to a greater extent compared to other professions.We investigated whether low arterial oxygen tension ([Formula see text]) or hypoxia-induced plasma volume (PV) contraction, which reduces central blood volume (BV) and atrial distension, explain reduction in circulating atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) after prolonged hypoxic exposure. Ten healthy males were exposed for 4 days to hypobaric hypoxia corresponding to an altitude of 3,500 m. PV changes were determined by carbon monoxide rebreathing. Venous plasma concentrations of midregional proANP (MR-proANP) were measured before and at the end of the exposure. At the latter time point, the measurement was repeated after 1) restoration of [Formula see text] by breathing a hyperoxic gas mixture for 30 min and 2) restoration of BV by fluid infusion. Correspondingly, left ventricular end-diastolic volume (LVEDV), left atrial area (LAA), and right atrial area (RAA) were determined by ultrasound before exposure and both before and after fluid infusion at the end of the exposure. The efficiency of oxidative processes was monitored by combined approach based on determination of efficiency of wastewater treatment and impact to waste sludge stabilization. Degradation of Tiamulin in model wastewater (100 mg L-1) during oxidation was followed by COD and DOC measurements while changes in biodegradability were determined by respirometric measurements. Biogas production potential was also determined to identify problems related to anaerobic digestion of waste sludge resulted in treatment of Tiamulin-contaminated wastewater. At ozone dose of 69 gozone gCOD-1 and 220 gozone gDOC-1removal for COD and DOC was 26% and 17%, respectively. Better biotreatability was confirmed by respirometric testing.
