Mesentericorenocaval portosystemic shunt morphology has not been previously reported in the cat and should be considered as a differential diagnosis for cats presenting with peripartum onset of malaise, ptyalism or ataxia.
An 8-year-old spayed female domestic shorthair cat was presented for a recheck evaluation of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and chronic kidney disease. Three years prior to presentation, the patient was diagnosed with obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and started on atenolol. The left ventricular outflow tract obstruction subsequently resolved. Biochemical analysis a week prior to presentation demonstrated severe azotemia. Transthoracic echocardiograph revealed pericardial effusion, pleural effusion, severe left ventricular concentric hypertrophy, severe left atrial enlargement and continuous left-to-right flow through the interatrial septum near the fossa ovalis. The patient was euthanized owing to poor prognosis, and gross examination at necropsy revealed a valve-incompetent patent foramen ovale secondary to severe left atrial dilation.
To our knowledge, this is the first report of an acquired left-to-right shunt through a valve-incompetent foramen ovale in a cat with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Severe left atrial dilation was suspected to cause interatrial shunting through the valve-incompetent foramen ovale, and this finding may be relevant to echocardiographic evaluations in other cats.

Placental malaria (PM) is a major public health problem associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes such as low birth weight (LBW), preterm delivery and maternal anemia. The present study is aimed to determine the prevalence of placental malaria among asymptomatic pregnant women in Wolkite health center, Gurage zone, Southern Ethiopia.
Facility-based cross-sectional study was carried out from June 2019 to August 2019. A total of 230 pregnant women were involved in the study where socio-demographic data, medical and obstetric history were collected using pretested structured questionnaires. Blood samples were collected at delivery from maternal capillary, placenta and umbilical cord for the detection of malarial parasite. Maternal hematocrit was determined to screen for anemia.
In this study, the prevalence of placental malaria, peripheral malaria and umbilical cord malaria was 3.9% (9/230), 15.2% (35/230) and 2.6% (6/230) respectively.
and
were detected by microscopy. All babies with positive umbilical cord blood films were born from a mother with placental malaria. read more Maternal anemia was recorded in 58.3% of the women. In univariate analysis, placental malaria was significantly associated with LBW (
< 0.001) unlike parity and maternal anemia.
Placental malaria among asymptomatic pregnant women is low in Wolkite health centre, Gurage zone in Southern Ethiopia. Moreover, placental malaria was strongly associated with LBW. Thus, further strengthening the existing prevention and control activities and screening of asymptomatic pregnant women as part of routine antenatal care service is very essential.

In Ethiopia more than half of the children under 5 years are anemic and between 2011 and 2016 anemia in children under-5 increased by 28.7%. This study aimed to analyze this increase in anemia by socio-demographic characteristics.
This study was a secondary analysis of the data from the Ethiopian Demographic Health Surveys (EDHS) for 2011 and 2016. Theincrease of anemia was calculated using percentage change. The chi-square test was used to determine the association between anemia and six predictor variables of age, sex, mother’s educational level, residence, wealth quintile and region. The strength of association was measured using Cramer’s V.
Anemia increased in all age groups, both sexes, urban and rural residencies, across all wealth quintiles, all maternal education levels and all regions of Ethiopia except Benishangul Gumuz. The highest increase of anemia was seen among children born to mothers with above secondary education (65.8%), living in urban areas (40.1%), in the lowest wealth quintile (41 Ethiopia could learn from this experience. The high increase of anemia in children born to mothers with above secondary education and highest wealth quintiles points to poor dietary practices, therefore, community based nutrition education for mothers needs to be strengthened.
Anemia in children under-5 continues to be a severe public health problem in Ethiopia. Benishangul Gumuz region is the only region that was able to reduce the prevalence of all forms of anemia under-5 between 2011 and 2016, consequently other regions of Ethiopia could learn from this experience. The high increase of anemia in children born to mothers with above secondary education and highest wealth quintiles points to poor dietary practices, therefore, community based nutrition education for mothers needs to be strengthened.Variants of GRIN1, which encodes GluN1, are associated with developmental delay, epilepsy, and cortical malformation. Here, we report a case of arthrogryposis multiplex congenita with polymicrogyria and infantile encephalopathy caused by a heterozygous variant, c.1949A>C, p.(Asn650Thr) of GRIN1, which could result in the disruption of the third transmembrane domain (M3) of GluN1. This case expands our understanding of the known phenotypes of GRIN1-related neurodevelopmental disorders.A 1-year-old baby with phylloid-type pigmentary mosaicism, hypotonia, ambiguous genitalia, and a positive screening test for congenital adrenal hyperplasia was referred. Previous sonograph, cytogenetics, and metabolic profile were inconclusive, therefore we performed an additional karyotype and a molecular cytogenetics studies. A mosaic karyotype 45,X/46,X,der(Y)t(Y;14) was characterized in peripheral blood. Congenital adrenal hyperplasia genes were sequenced and the results were negative. The ambiguous genitalia was the result of the special gonosomal mosaicism. The low level of trisomy 14 led to minor physical characteristics and mild mental retardation; also, Turner syndrome features can be expected rather than severe trisomy 14 stigmata.
