    Copyright © Polish Medical Society of Radiology 2020.Purpose Pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) is one of the major health problems in the elderly population, causing significant morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study is to evaluate the significance of the high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) modality for the diagnosis of PTB, in comparison to culture test. Material and methods Thoracic HRCT images of the study population, comprising 124 patients clinically suspected for PTB with smear and culture reports, were analysed for sensitivity and specificity of the HRCT test. Features of active PTB were centrilobular nodules, ‘tree-in-bud’ pattern densities, macro-nodules, consolidations, cavitary lesions, ground-glass opacities, and miliary nodules. Results Among the study population, 108 cases presented HRCT features of active PTB and the remaining cases were negative but had presented a few features mimicking PTB. As inferred from positive culture test results, 106 cases had active PTB, the remaining cases were culture negative for PTB. False-positive (FP) or ‘type I error’ cases, and false-negative (FN) or ‘type II error’ cases were ascertained by Bayes’ theorem. Sensitivity (true positive rate) and specificity (true negative rate) of HRCT test were 0.8125 and 0.8571, respectively. Conclusions For proper diagnosis the predictive capability, as two values of ‘a posteriori probability’, was computed; the mean value of ‘a posteriori probability’ for HRCT was 0.6358. When its culture test was positive, the HRCT test was 69.56-92.85% efficient in ascertaining positive results with a sample; on the other hand, when its culture test was negative it was 66.66-100% efficient for a negative result. Case report We present the case of a 66-year-old man who developed coma with subsequent DOC after a severe traumatic brain injury. Behavioural assessment constitutes the gold standard in the evaluation of patients with DOC. In the case presented herein the neuropsychological findings were ambiguous, and the patient underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to determine whether he was in a vegetative state or minimally conscious state. Three paradigms passive, active, and resting state fMRI were used to study the brain activity in our patient. Conclusions fMRI provided reliable evidence of preserved minimal consciousness. The neuroimaging techniques used in our patient were vital for his further treatment. Copyright © Polish Medical Society of Radiology 2020.In the course of our research to investigate the cancer prevention potency of natural products derived from plant materials, we isolated fifty-five compounds, including twenty-one new compounds from the peels of Citrus limon, aerial parts of Isodon japonicus, and leaves of Lansium domesticum. The chemical structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated by chemical/physicochemical evidence, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and mass spectrometry results. Moreover, the absolute stereochemistry of the new compounds were elucidated by various techniques such as chemical synthesis, modified Mosher’s method, Cu-Kα X-ray crystallographic analysis, and comparison of experimental and predicted electronic circular dichroism data. It is an important industrial material, and is also used as a white cosmetic pigment. We previously reported that fine particles of kaolin have genotoxic potency to Chinese hamster ovary CHO AA8 cells, and to the lungs of C57BL/6 J and ICR mice. In the present study, we evaluated the genotoxicity of different particle sizes of kaolin using primary normal human diploid epidermal keratinocytes and primary normal human diploid dermal fibroblasts, in addition to a CHO AA8 cell line. Findings After 6-h treatment with kaolin micro- and nano-particles of particle sizes 4.8 μm and 0.2 μm (200 nm), respectively, the frequencies of micronucleated cells increased in a dose-dependent manner. The frequency increased 3- to 4-fold by exposure to the particles at 200 μg/mL (i.e., 31.4 μg/cm2) in all cells tested. Two-way ANOVA revealed a significant main effect of particle size, and the nano-particles tended to have a higher potency of micronuarce, the findings of the present study could contribute to safety evaluations of kaolin particles when used as a white cosmetic pigment. © The Author(s) 2020.Background Despite extensive studies, there are still no clinically available neuroprotective treatments for traumatic brain injury. Objectives In previous studies we demonstrated beneficial treatment effects of polyarginine peptides R18 (18-mer of arginine; 300 nmol/kg) and R18D (18-mer of D-arginine; 1000 nmol/kg) in a rat model of impact-acceleration closed-head injury. Methods We examined the efficacy of R18D when intravenously administered at a low (100 nmol/kg) and high (1000 nmol/kg) dose, 30 minutes after a closed-head injury in male Sprague-Dawley rats. Results At postinjury day 3, treatment with R18D at the high dose significantly reduced axonal injury (P = 0.044), whereas the low-dose treatment of R18D showed a trend for reduced axonal injury. Following assessment in the Barnes maze, both doses of R18D treatment appeared to improve learning and memory recovery compared with vehicle treatment at postinjury days 1 and 3, albeit not to a statistically significant level. Rotarod assessment of vestibulomotor recovery did not differ between R18D and the vehicle treatment groups. Conclusions R18D modestly decreased axonal injury only at the highest dose used but had no significant effect on functional recovery. These findings warrant further studies with additional doses to better understand peptide pharmacodynamics and provide information to guide optimal dosing.
