The introduction of surface acoustic wave (SAW) technology on microfluidics has shown its powerfully controlling and actuating fluid and particle capability in a micro-nano scale, such as fluid mixing, fluid translation, microfluidic pumping, microfluidic rotational motor, microfluidic atomization, particle or cell concentration, droplet or cell sorting, reorientation of nano-objects, focusing and separation of particles, and droplet jetting. The SAW-driven droplet jetting technology enjoys the advantages of simple structure to fabricate with little hindrance, compact size to integrate with other components, high biocompatibility with biological cells or other molecule samples, large force in realizing fast fluidic actuation, and contact-free manipulation with fluid. The realization of this technology can effectively overcome some bottleneck problems in the current micro-injection technology, such as mechanical swear, complicated and bulky structure, and strict limitation of requirements on fluidic characteristics. This article reviews and reorganizes SAW-microfluidic jetting technology from decades of years, referring to the interaction mechanism theory of SAW and fluid, experimental methods of SAW-microfluidic jetting, effects of related parameters on objected pinch-off droplets, and applications of individual structures. Finally, we made a summary of the research results of the current literature and look forward and appraise where this discipline of SAW-microfluidic jetting could go in the future.Novel coronavirus, COVID-19, erupted in Wuhan, China, in 2019 and has now spread to almost all countries in the world. Until the end of November 2020, there were over 50 × 106 people diagnosed with COVID-19 worldwide and it caused at least 1 × 106 deaths. These numbers are still increasing. To control the spread of the pandemic and to choose a suitable treatment plan, a fast, accurate, effective, and ready-to-use diagnostic method has become an important prerequisite. In this Review, we introduce the principles of multiple off-site and on-site detection methods for virus diagnosis, including qPCR-based, ELISA-based, CRISPR-based methods, etc. All of these methods have been successfully implanted on the microfluidic platform for rapid screening. We also summarize currently available diagnostic methods for the detection of SARS, MERS, and COVID-19. Some of them not only can be used to analyze the SARS and MERS but also have the potential for COVID-19 detection after modifications. Finally, we hope that understanding of current microfluidic-based detection approaches can help physicians and researchers to develop advanced, rapid, and appropriate clinical detection techniques that reduce the financial expenditure of the society, accelerate the examination process, increase the accuracy of diagnosis, and eventually suppress the worldwide pandemic.Meroanencephaly occurs when there is an incomplete open median calvarial defect. We present a rare case of a female fetus with meroanencephaly referred to our institution at 24 weeks and imaged with both prenatal ultrasound and MRI, demonstrating an open neural tube defect in the high parietal area and lack of visualization of the supratentorial ventricular system. Postnatal the child survived and went on to require antibiotic therapy and closure of the defect without cerebral spinal fluid diversion but demonstrates severe permanent neurologic deficits.We describe a rare case of intramammary lymphadenopathy due to Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease. A 15-year old female presented to the Breast Clinic with complaints of a tender, palpable right breast lump. An ultrasound of the area of concern demonstrated an enlarged 2.9 cm intramammary lymph node with preservation of the fatty hilum. An ultrasound guided core biopsy of the lymph node confirmed the diagnosis of Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease.Traumatic, isolated oculomotor nerve palsy is a rare clinical finding and only few reports demonstrate associated magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings. Here, we present the case of a 70-year-old woman with left-sided oculomotor nerve palsy following a mild head trauma due to an e-bike accident. Post-traumatic cerebral computed tomography revealed punctiform hemorrhage in the left interpeduncular cistern and the following MRI confirmed an intraneural hemorrhage of the left oculomotor nerve. Nine weeks later, the follow-up MRI showed progressive atrophy and contrast-enhancement of the left oculomotor nerve. To support functional recovery, a treatment with intravenous corticosteroids was started. Six months later, the patient presented with improved oculomotor nerve function and partial recovery of ptosis and diplopia. Successful uptake and implementation hinges on careful planning and, most importantly, appropriate fit between the service and the implementing environment.
