    The lack of suitable donor organs limits the number of solid organ transplants. Patients who underwent cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) after cardiac arrest may represent a sizeable subgroup of deceased organ donors, as they often progress to brain death or have life-sustaining therapy withdrawn. We aimed to quantify deceased organ donation after CPR in Switzerland for the first time by analysing the characteristics of potential and utilised organ donors after CPR.

    Data on deceased adult and paediatric patients who were reported to and approved by Swisstransplant for organ donation were analysed, including both donation after brain death (DBD) and donation after controlled cardiocirculatory death (cDCD) from 2016 to 2018. We analysed baseline characteristics of potential donors who underwent CPR in the context of their hospitalisation, as compared with donors without prior CPR. Considering the varying characteristics between these two donor groups, we assessed the effect of CPR on different allocation n terms of donor and organ utilisation, as well as the average organ yield. Thus, all patients who are resuscitated from cardiac arrest but who subsequently progress to death should be evaluated for organ donation. How CPR donors compare with non-CPR donors regarding transplant outcomes should be studied further.

Here, using whole-genome re-sequencing and terminal restriction fragment assays, we found substantial natural intraspecific variation in telomere length in Arabidopsis thaliana, rice (Oryza sativa), and maize (Zea mays). Genome-wide association study (GWAS) mapping in A. thaliana identified 13 regions with GWAS-significant associations underlying telomere length variation, including a region that harbors the telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) gene. Population genomic analysis provided evidence for a selective sweep at the TERT region associated with longer telomeres. We found that telomere length is negatively correlated with flowering time variation not only in A. thaliana, but also in maize and rice, indicating a link between life-history traits and chromosome integrity. Our results point to several possible reasons for this correlation, including the possibility that longer telomeres may be more adaptive in plants that have faster developmental rates (and therefore flower earlier). Our work suggests that chromosomal structure itself might be an adaptive trait associated with plant life-history strategies.Members of the GROWTH REGULATING FACTOR (GRF) family of transcription factors play key roles in the promotion of plant growth and development. Many GRFs are post-transcriptionally repressed by microRNA (miRNA) miR396, an evolutionarily conserved small RNA, which restricts their expression to proliferative tissue. AZD1080 We performed a comprehensive analysis of the GRF family in eudicot plants and found that in many species all the GRFs have a miR396-binding site. Yet, we also identified GRFs with mutations in the sequence recognized by miR396, suggesting a partial or complete release of their post-transcriptional repression. Interestingly, Brassicaceae species share a group of GRFs that lack miR396 regulation, including Arabidopsis GRF5 and GRF6. We show that instead of miR396-mediated post-transcriptional regulation, the spatiotemporal control of GRF5 is achieved through evolutionarily conserved promoter sequences, and that AUXIN RESPONSE FACTOR 2 (ARF2) binds to such conserved sequences to repress GRF5 expression. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the unchecked expression of GRF5 in arf2 mutants is responsible for the increased cell number of arf2 leaves. The results describe a switch in the repression mechanisms that control the expression of GRFs and mechanistically link the control of leaf growth by miR396, GRFs, and ARF2 transcription factors.

    Subsyndromal PTSD (sub-PTSD) is associated with functional impairment and increased risk for full PTSD. This study examined factors associated with progression from sub-PTSD to full PTSD symptomatology among previously deployed military veterans.

    Data were drawn from a longitudinal survey of Navy and Marine Corps personnel leaving military service between 2007 and 2010 administered immediately before separation (baseline) and ~1 year later (follow-up). Survey measures assessed PTSD symptoms at both times; the baseline survey also assessed potential predictors of symptom change over time. Logistic regression models were used to identify predictors of progression from sub-PTSD to full PTSD status.

    Compared to those with no or few PTSD symptoms at baseline, individuals with sub-PTSD were almost three times more likely to exhibit full PTSD symptomatology at follow-up. Risk factors for symptom increase among those with sub-PTSD included moderate or high levels of combat exposure and utilization of fewer positive coping behaviors.
